TMJ Treatment/Jaw Pain

Disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) develop for many reasons that include grinding of the teeth, clenching, tight muscles, muscle spasms, swelling of the joint region, or damage to the joint. Symptoms can include headaches, neck and shoulder pain, ear pain, clicking or grinding of the joint, and tight muscles. Deciding which treatment is right for you is best planned after a comprehensive examination. Whatever the cause, the results may include a clicking or grating noise when you open your mouth or trouble opening your mouth wide. Many times treatment is very conservative providing special splint therapy. Washing of the joint space is a suggested procedure that is performed in the office with minimal post operative problems and often a relief of symptoms.
