Nitrous Oxide

The Center for Dental Excellence offers Nitrous Oxide as an option for patients of all ages who are mildly or moderately anxious or nervous about seeing the dentist. Also known as laughing gas, Nitrous Oxide can ease fears so that you can relax and receive treatment comfortably and safely.

Nitrous Oxide is administered by placing a small mask over your nose. You will be asked to breathe through your nose and not through your mouth. As the gas begins to work, you become calm. Because Nitrous Oxide does not cause patients to sleep, you will continue to be able to talk with your dentist. When the gas is turned off, the effects of sedation wear off almost immediately.

Sometimes Nitrous Oxide can make you feel nauseous; it’s best that you not eat too much before you appointment time. Also, if you are congested or have trouble breathing through your nose, the Nitrous Oxide may be less effective.

As with every procedure, our dentists and staff will discuss all options and possible side-effects prior to administering or prescribing any medications to you. Throughout the procedure the patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, and blood oxygen saturation are measured.
